One of the categories of dental equipment and accessories we stock and distribute is tungsten carbide burs.
What are Tungsten Carbide Burs & How do They Compare to Other Types of Dental Burs?
Tungsten carbide burs, also known as just carbide burs, are a piece of dental equipment manufactured using tungsten carbide. This material is three times stronger than steel and can also withstand high temperatures, meaning the longevity of these dental burs is drastically increased in comparison to steel alternatives. Due to their sturdiness, these burs maintain their sharpness for longer, minimising replacement costs whilst also making them highly efficient cutting tools. In comparison to diamond burs which grind the patient’s teeth, tungsten carbide burs cut and chip away at the tooth, allowing for a smoother, more seamless finish.
Tungsten carbide burs are often used for the removal of, cutting and polishing of hard oral tissues, including tooth and bone. They are most often used in surgical procedures such as removing old fillings, shaping bone and preparing cavities for fillings. Due to their strength, carbide burs can also be used on a wide variety of materials, including acrylics, gold and silver, making them suited to a more extensive range of dental procedures and practices. Whilst they produce less vibration and noise than a diamond dental bur, they find it difficult to cut through lithium disilicate and zirconia. However, carbide instruments are the perfect choice if you are cutting through metals, as diamond burs are more likely to overheat and become dull.
