Spotlight on: LM Mini Gracey’s

Gracey Curettes are well known area specific curettes for the removal of deep subgingival calculus, and finishing off subgingival root surfaces. What is not as well known, is the role of the Mini Gracey’s, of which the team at J&S Davis are frequently asked about.

Before an explanation is given, firstly, we define two terms which will be used to explain the role of the Mini Gracey in more detail.

‘Toe’ – The bottom edge of the curette. This is the cutting surface.

‘Terminal Shank’ – The lower half (roughly) of the blade. Consider this your working length – essentially how deep you can reach.

Mini Gracey’s have a longer terminal shank paired with a shorter toe. This allows for deeper access, essential in cases of more severe perio. The shorter toe reduces soft tissue trauma when working deep in the pocket, which is crucial in MINST (Minimally invasive non-surgical therapy). For this reason, Mini Gracey’s are often the instrument of choice for periodontists, hygienists, and therapists with a focus on minimally invasive Perio treatment.

This is in comparison to Standard Graceys, which are exactly that: standard on both toe and terminal shank. Standard Gracey’s are a good option for more general subgingival cleaning. The longer working edge also means more tooth surface is debrided with each stroke.

To summarise, Mini Gracey curettes have a shorter, thinner blade and a longer lower shank for better adaptation in tight, narrow pockets, deep furcations and complex root anatomy. Standard Gracey curettes are longer and wider, which can provide more leverage but are less effective in confined areas compared to Mini Gracey’s.

The team at J&S Davis attend at wide variety of dental shows, courses and events across the UK and Ireland, including the upcoming Oral Health Summit in Edinburgh and the IDHA in Cork, where the LM instruments will be present and experts on hand to discuss.
