What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry involves the repair or replacement of damaged or missing teeth and also the restoration of dental tissues. This field of dentistry often uses crowns, bridges and implants to restore gum and tooth health and stability. Restorative dentistry is essential for cavities and tooth decay, as well as if a patient is suffering from missing, damaged or broken teeth. As it can also be concerned with aesthetics, restorative dentistry is often mistaken for cosmetic dentistry; however, the main purpose is to improve oral health and function in order to give patients long-lasting, healthy results!
What Are The Different Types Of Restorative Dental Procedures?
Fillings:
One example of a restorative procedure is a filling, which is used to repair small cavities (holes) caused by bacteria eating away at the tooth enamel. These procedures just involve practitioners removing the damaged or decayed part of the tooth or teeth and filling the hole with a tooth-coloured composite, which helps to prevent further damage and decay.
Bridges:
This procedure involves using a dental bridge to replace a tooth or row of teeth. Bridges are basically artificial teeth, with crowns on either side, that fit over the patient’s natural teeth.
Dental Implants:
Dental implants don’t require alteration of natural teeth, like crowns or bridges, and act as a small post that replaces a missing tooth root. This restorative dental procedure is highly valued by dental professionals, consultants and specialists, as once a crown has been added to the implant, they function like normal, healthy teeth!
Dentures:
Restorative dentistry includes both partial and full denture treatments, depending on the extent of restoration needed. They rest on top of the patient’s gums and are supported by the jawbone.
Crowns:
Dental crowns are used by dentists and dental professionals to repair large cavities or to restore broken and damaged teeth. They fit over the entire tooth, which means to place a crown; some of the natural tooth enamel will need to be removed to ensure they fit.
Inlays & Onlays:
On occasions where a cavity is too big for a filling but too small for a crown, an inlay or onlay may be performed. This is a custom restorative procedure in which a dentist will tailor the restoration to fit the patient’s exact natural tooth structure before permanently bonding them into place. An inlay fills the area between the cusps of the teeth, whereas an onlay is more prominent and covers one or more cusps.
