Let’s talk Latin
Many fundamental dental concepts were developed during a time when Latin was the language of scholarship. Today, Latin remains in dentistry as the root for much technical vocabulary, particularly for anatomical structures and common dental conditions.
Examples of dental terms with Latin roots include ‘Dens’, which is Latin for ‘tooth’ and the root of words such as dental, dentistry and dentures, ‘Gingiva’, Latin for ‘gums’ and the basis for words such as gingivitis and gingivectomy and ‘Halitus’, Latin for ‘breath’ which explains the origin of the word halitosis.
