What You Already Know – What Is A Dental Matrix System, And What Are They Used For?

Dental Matrix System by J&S DavisAs you will already know, a dental matrix system comprises dental matrices and wedges, which work in unison to make up a fundamental part of restorative dentistry.

  1. Dental Matrices: Dental matrices are plastic or metal bands adaptable to the surface of the tooth, which enable them to efficiently reproduce anatomically correct contours. This creates a temporary wall around a tooth during a filling procedure. The dental matrix is able to recreate the natural shape of the patient’s tooth and hold filling material (such as amalgam or composite) in place to restore proper interproximal contacts. Dental matrices are typically used for cavity restorations on posterior teeth.
  2. Dental Wedges: These restorative procedures are aided by the other component of a dental matrix system: dental wedges. These are inserted by dental professionals between teeth during composite restorations and a filling procedure. Their job is to separate a patient’s teeth slightly to secure the matrix band. This prevents restorative materials (filling material and composite material) from leaking over the gums and ensures proper contact points. This also helps to protect adjacent teeth.
