What Are Dental Extractions?

Dental Extraction From J&S DavisDental extraction or tooth removal is a dental surgery which involves removing a patient’s tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Typically, a patient will be provided with a general anaesthetic before a dental professional performs the surgical removal.

Following this dental treatment procedure, temporary facial swelling is normal and can be dealt with with an ice pack, but post-operative instructions are given to the patient to prevent possible complications and ensure a smooth and comfortable healing process. Examples of this include eating soft foods and avoiding any strenuous activity. There are a couple of risks surrounding dental extractions, including nerve damage, damage to surrounding bone, the extraction site, and adjacent teeth, reaction to local anaesthetic, and an issue referred to as a dry socket, which is when the blood clot in the tooth socket falls out after the extraction. This is why ensuring a safe, simple extraction is incredibly important to prevent possible complications. However, if performed by a trusted and qualified dental professional or oral surgeon, tooth extraction isn’t considered a high risk surgical procedure.

What Are The Benefits Of Tooth Extractions?

The most common reasons for tooth extractions to be carried out due to severe tooth damage, including fracturing, or decay, infection, gum disease, oral crowding, where teeth have insubstantial space and for wisdom teeth removal, where wisdom teeth are causing patient’s pain and discomfort. Dental extraction can solve these issues and ensure patient comfort and oral health. Surgical extractions are also known to relieve a lot of pain associated with the reasons for the oral surgery, providing patients with relief.
