They are used in a variety of dental procedures. Dental burs are made up of three sections:

1. The Head: The head of the dental bur will contain diamond grit or sharp-edged blades designed to grind or cut.
2. The Neck: The neck of the dental bur connects the head and the shank.
3. The Shank: This is the part of the dental bur that is inserted into the handpiece. They are categorised by how they attach to high-speed handpieces, for example, you can have FG shanks (Friction Grip), RA shanks (Right Angle/Latch) or HP shanks (Handpiece/Straight).

There are 3 materials that are typically used to make dental burs:

1. Steel Burs: Steel burs offer good edge retention and do not blunt as quickly as some other alternatives. They are an economical and simple solution for dental procedures such as removing dentine and cavity preparation. However, careful maintenance after use is required to prevent corrosion.
2. Tungsten Carbide Burs: Unlike diamond burs, tungsten carbide burs cut and chip the tooth rather than using a grinding motion. Tungsten carbide burs are ideal for composite restorations or metal-based restoration removals. Three times stronger than steel, their higher initial costs are justified by their longer life.
3. Diamond Burs: The last common type of bur is the dental diamond bur, which is often used for smoothing and finishing work for crowns and veneers. Utilising diamond grit at the head, they operate at high speeds with unmatched accuracy and minimal vibration. The only downside of diamond burs, however, is that they are susceptible to clogging by debris, and repeated sterilisation can reduce their sharpness.
