Alginate impression material is a natural product derived from seaweed that is used to create oral replicas, which form moulds for dentures, bridges, veneers, mouth guards, braces, crowns and other dental prosthetics. As an irreversible hydrocolloid, when it absorbs water, the powder swells up, and once it is mixed with water and set, it is unable to return to its original state. Typically, dental alginate power contains sodium alginate, trisodium phosphate, potassium titanium fluoride, zinc oxide, calcium sulphate and diatomaceous earth.
